Now, more than ever, the newspaper classifieds are being tossed aside for a bigger and better medium in which job exploration is thriving – online job postings. Besides allowing for a dynamic job-hunting experience, online postings are allowing recruiters and employers more options than ever to get their jobs noticed. No longer are employers restricted to abbreviated ads with little information. The Internet has paved the way for employers to post informative, detailed ads with dynamic links to email and their corporate web site. The current challenge for recruiters is writing exciting ads that are both eye-catching and informative.

Studies show that there are two types of job seekers who are currently utilizing the Internet for employment – active and passive. Active job seekers are looking for an employment opportunity. They are cruising the web, taking notes and ready to investigate opportunities that fit their criteria. Passive job seekers are testing the waters to see what’s out there. They may be considering a career change (or at least a change of venue) and are using the Internet to find one. When writing online postings, it’s important to consider both groups.

A Few Things to Remember

Use words that are likely to be used as keywords by potential candidates as well as synonyms for those words.

Include a detailed description of the job being offered such as specific responsibilities, hours, reason for the opening, etc.

Give a detailed account of the necessary qualifications like education, certifications, previous job experience, security clearances, etc.

Use industry jargon and "buzz" words that will immediately catch the eye of a candidate in a particular field.

Remember to include the company’s location region or city and state.

Include information about the company’s work environment, benefits, and other special offerings. Also include some details about the company like products/services it provides, reasons why it’s a great place to work, available training, etc.

If possible, include a dynamic link to the company’s recruitment section of their corporate web site as well as an email address. Also, be sure to include the exact method in which resumes should be sent (e-mail – no attachments, fax – no cover letter, etc.).

It has been found that most professionals seeking employment via online postings won’t even consider an ad that does not include a salary range or rate. If possible, it is wise to include it.

Use "Available Immediately" to help gain the attention of seekers looking for immediate employment.
