Top Ten Video Interview Questions

Hiring managers are using video interviews to narrow their candidate pools without spending a lot of money reimbursing candidates for their travel expenses. Although there are some key differences between video interviews and in-person interviews, one thing remains the same: you need to be prepared to answer common interview questions.

1. Why Do You Want to Work for Us?

Before participating in video interviews, commit the company's mission and vision to memory. Make sure to include some of the information from the company website in your answer.

2. What Are Your Strengths?

Do not be shy about listing your strengths for interviewers, but make sure each strength you list is relevant to the job.

3. Why Is There a Gap in Your Employment History?

If you have a gap of several months, or even several years, be prepared to show the interviewer you made good use of your time. Tell the interviewer you took classes or volunteered at a nonprofit organization to keep your skills current.

4. What Are Your Weaknesses?

Hiring managers want to know you have enough self-awareness to identify your own weaknesses. Tell the interviewer a genuine weakness and then outline the steps you took to ensure the flaw did not affect your work.

5. What Would Your Former Manager Say You Need to Improve on to Move Up in Your Industry?

Hiring managers use video interviews to determine if you have the right skills and personality for the job. If an interviewer asks what your former manager might want you to improve on, be ready with specific examples. Use information from past performance reviews or informal meetings to answer the question.

6. Why Are You Leaving Your Current Employer?

Be honest with the interviewer, but do not say anything negative about your boss or your employer. Explain you want to grow your career or explore opportunities in a new city.

7. Where Do You See Yourself in Three to Five Years?

Make your answer as relevant to the job opening as possible. If you are interviewing for a supervisory position, tell the hiring manager you see yourself overseeing several direct areas.

8. What Makes You Different From Other Candidates?

When you participate in video interviews, the hiring manager does not get to shake your hand or see how you respond to the stress of an in-person interview, so you have to use your words to explain why you are the best candidate. Mention certifications, awards or glowing references from past employers.

9. Are You Willing to Relocate?

If you are not willing to relocate, do not tell the interviewer you are; a simple yes or no answer suffices for this question.

10. Are You Willing and Able to Travel Extensively?

Honesty is important during video interviews. If you are not willing to spend a lot of time traveling, do not imply it in any way. Make your limits clear. For example, you might be willing to travel, but only for one week a month.

Video interviews are more popular than ever; brush up on your interviewing skills. Practice your answers to these interview questions, and you are likely to impress hiring managers enough to receive further consideration for the job.
