Planning Design Engineer
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, MIS, or Information Systems, or Bachelor's Degree and equivalent work experience.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who requires little supervision and can obtain quick results. Candidate must be extremely well organized and thrive in an extremely fast paced, cutting-edge environment.
Candidates should meet either one or both of the qualification sections listed as 'connectivity' and 'systems.'
***Connectivity***
Minimum 3 years experience with an IP, Routing, Switching, and Load Balancing background in a service provider environment including complex data center and WAN environments.
Knowledge and hands-on experience with:
-architecting the data flow of applications to and from DMZs, firewalls, SLB devices, and servers while taking advantage of advanced server health monitoring techniques and DNS dependencies as required. Experience with IPv6 in these data flows is desirable.
-IP address allocation fundamentals, solid awareness of security impacts based on IP design, and the ability to work with project teams and vendors to learn new platforms and develop scalable IP designs.
-TCP/IP, multi-layer routing and switching, SLB concepts, firewall rules, NAT, BGP, OSPF, IPv6, QOS and MPLS in a backbone & data center environment.
-supporting network infrastructure in a 24 x 7 model and with large scale testing and modeling environments & equivalent tools is desirable.
-connectivity architecture for PDSN/HA and EVDO mobile/wireless elements as well as working knowledge of IMS, EPC, PGW, LTE, SBC and VoIP network elements is desirable.
***Systems***
Minimum 3 years experience with a systems, database, clustering, server farm, and SAN/NAS deployment & management background in a service provider or data center environment.
Knowledge & hands-on experience with:
-building & supporting commercial, 24x7, carrier-grade, Internet-facing systems including experience with systems engineering, design and support of those systems. Candidate must be knowledgeable about recent server & storage hardware and backup technologies.
-relational databases, specifically Oracle and MYSQL, replication technologies, and experience in the design & optimization of physical database solutions for new architectures and deployments. Proven experience identifying database performance bottlenecks and necessary tuning parameters leading to successful optimizations is required.
-deployment, optimization, and maintenance of Unix and Windows based server operating systems including clustering, high availability scheme deployments and system sizing activities. Experience with Linux, Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX setup and configuration is required.
-understanding of IP network services and protocols.
-supporting server infrastructure in a 24 x 7 model and with large scale testing and modeling environments & equivalent tools is desirable.
-Application integration within and operation of an IMS based environment is desirable.
***All candidates must possess and demonstrate***:
-solid experience and proficiency in project leadership skills, the ability to build productive relationships, and the capability to lead cross functional team technical discussions to a productive conclusion in the support of building an effective and timely detailed design.
-strong interpersonal and communications skills along with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
-the ability and experience of matching development of a technical solution with business requirements & objectives.
-ability to effectively communicate a design solution in both written and verbal form to stakeholders, peers, project sponsors, and engineering teams. Candidate should possess experience writing detailed technical documents.
-ability to succeed in a non-structured environment and be able to demonstrate quick & decisive decision making as well as effective analytical skills. Candidate will have experience managing and communicating expectations to vendors & project sponsors and managing the a member of the Planning Design team, the candidate is responsible for the production of nationwide reliable, simple, implementable, scalable, and operationally viable system & network connectivity detailed design solutions used to enable VZW product and service deployments. Candidate will lead collaboration with product development, peer, HQ, and area/regional teams to obtain input as appropriate to the detailed design.
The selected candidate will:
-interact with project sponsor and vendors to extract & refine business, technical, and timeline initiative objectives, solicit input as appropriate, and make design decisions that meet requirement goals, leading to the creation of the detailed design via established processes and in compliance with design team standards needed to implement the identified product & service offerings. Candidate will engage peer subject matter experts as necessary to ensure effective designs. Requests for information, responses, and outstanding requirement deliverables from project sponsor, stakeholders, and vendors will be tracked by the design team member to ensure that time to market objectives are met.
-Investigate and analyze product and service system/connectivity requirements, usage bandwidth, transaction rate, traffic flow, and user forecasts to determine system & connectivity design decisions considering unique VZW scalability factors.
-develop innovative yet simple solutions while considering system, connectivity, IP addressing, financial, space, power, cooling and other applicable requirements & resulting design decision impacts.
-make specific redundancy, disk, location, routing, database, and network connectivity design decisions, create deployment approaches, and document technical direction based upon analysis of requirements. Apply detailed design checklists and templates to facilitate the design process in support of rapid deployment of new products and services into the VZW network. Team member will ensure effective & scalable integration with existing network connectivity, commercial platforms, and support systems.
-iterate through design build document versions conducting rapid review sessions with stakeholders, peers, and project sponsors resulting in delivery of a consolidated detailed design build document and high level deployment roadmap to the engineering teams. Candidate is responsible to ensure acceptance of the deliverables into those teams.
