Personnel Analyst
Overview
The CSS Personnel Analysis team executes projects supporting McKinsey’s people mission: to build a great Firm that attracts, develops, excites, and retains exceptional people.
Personnel Analysts are expected to develop a clear expertise in the Firm’s personnel data, systems, analytical tools, and reporting in order to monitor and analyze key people related themes across the Firm. Primary team projects include: people metric reporting, consultant satisfaction survey, consulting staff planning, upward feedback, preparations for Firm leadership meetings, associate compensation calibration, and other ad hoc projects based on emerging trends.
Personnel Analysts serve a variety of internal clients including the Firm’s People Committee, Operating Committee, Regional and Office leadership, key initiatives and taskforces, Professional Development staff, and other audiences within the Firm. Analysts are expected to be excellent oral and written communicators, be able to collaboratively scope projects with internal clients, and be creative in solving quantitative and qualitative problems.
The qualified individual will, in addition, be responsible for advancing the technical solutions employed by the Personnel Analysis team. The person in this role will be the project lead on a cross-project initiative to develop new and enhance existing software tools and applications for functionality, usability, speed, automation, etc.
Detailed description
As a Personnel Analyst, you will use your expertise in data analysis and creative problem solving to work on a mix of planned and ad hoc analytical projects. Projects could include:
- Consultant staff planning: developing and running prediction models, collecting and analyzing relevant historical data, collaborating with other Firm functions, working closely with Firm leaders to develop planning guidelines and processes, and preparing materials for leadership meetings
- Team reporting projects, which includes collecting data and generating reports, indentifying and interpreting trends, controlling quality, identifying and implementing improvements to the content and process, and communicating and collaborating with office-based professional development and support staff. Reporting projects include:
- Consultant satisfaction survey: assisting in reporting and interpreting the results of the annual survey and additional ad hoc analyses for geographical leadership and people initiatives
- Assisting in reporting and interpreting the results of upward feedback reports for bi-annual promotion and election review cycles for personnel committees
- Regular people metric reporting on departure/arrival rates, growth, consultant performance, recruiting, etc.
- On an ad hoc basis, scope, execute, and communicate various analyses on personnel data in areas such as performance, diversity, experience, and more. This includes scoping analyses, exporting, compiling, and manipulating data, and summarizing the results in various formats ranging from simple oral explanations to multiple iterations of 50+ page PowerPoint presentations
You will be responsible for improving and effectively leveraging existing computer tools and workflows. This will include collaborating with team leadership, the IT department, and other Firm functions to identify needs and gaps, improve existing tools, and implement advanced tools. Responsibilities will include:
- Streamlining calculations and models in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access using macros, templates, and VBA
- Automating standardized reporting and developing customized reporting and querying tools using Cognos
- Performing quality assurance testing on existing reports and macros
- Implementing other scripted and programmatic solutions to Personnel Analysis projects
Desired skills
- Proven ability to plan and manage large analytic and technical projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate clearly, comfortably, and professionally with all internal clients including senior leaders
- Advanced-level technical skills in Microsoft Excel and proficiency in Microsoft Access and PowerPoint including designing and implementing models, working with large data sets, VBA, SQL, macros, etc.
- Proficiency with a business intelligence and reporting tool, such as Cognos
- Strong independent, as well as collaborative, problem solving and research skills
- Ability to multi-task across a range of work streams/projects with constantly shifting priorities
- Ability to handle confidential material discretely
Background/training
- Training in statistics, operations research, computer science or related fields; graduate-level equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant business experience demonstrating:
- Successful project management and leadership within a tea
- Ability to communicate professionally with clients and facilitate stakeholder
