Employee Relations Specialist (1 YR Maternity Leave)

Value Village Stores requires an Employee Relations Specialist, for a 1-year Maternity Leave contract (April 2013), who will be responsible for supporting and protecting the Company by ensuring employees are treated with respect according to the Company’s core values and in compliance with provincial legislation. 

 

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Work with employees at all levels of the Company to both pro-actively and reactively resolve employee relation issues and protect the Company.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact when the Open Door communication vehicles are utilized by employees to communicate work related concerns and/or complaints. 
  • Conduct harassment (including bullying) sexual harassment, and/or workplace violence investigations and recommend appropriate resolution.
  • Assist the Director of TM Relations to respond to external complaints received by the Company from Govt. agencies such as the Ministry of Labour, Human Rights Commission/Tribunal and Civil Court. 
  • Respond to complaints received by current and former employees.
  • With support from the Director of TM Relations, counsel store manage­ment and store support center on how to apply company HR policies ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations.
  • Provide mediation and conflict resolution support as required.
  • Assist the Director of TM Relations to complete reports and provide support with administrative duties, as required.
  • Ability to adjust hours based on business needs.


Requirements:

Required Experience / Competencies / Education include:

 

  • Post secondary diploma or university degree in HR.
  • Professional designation as a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) preferred.
  • A minimum of 3yrs of Employee Relations experience in a non-union environment.
  • Strong knowledge on how to apply employment standards and human rights legislation and practices.
  • A Minimum of 2 years experience gathering information, interviewing and conducting internal harassment including bullying, sexual harassment and workplace violence investigations.
  • Strong commitment to diversity management.
  • Ability to reason, use independent judgment, and make sound decisions which identify and resolve root issues while supporting the company’s culture and legal requirements
  • Ability to constructively influence store operators to follow your lead.
  • Requirement to professionally and accurately respond to complaints and claims received by various provincial ministries, on or before due date.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with individuals at all levels of the company.
  • Exceptional planning and time management skills.
  • Ability to set realistic and measurable goals.
  • Ability to deal with people in a respectful, tactful, diplomatic, and professional manner at all times.
  • Ability to communicate in French would be an asset.
