Description Director of Employee Relations
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY/PUPOSE
The Director of Employee Relations provides leadership, direction, and management to the Employee Relations (ER) function in providing business-focused issue resolution and corrective action consultation in a neutral environment. Provides senior level resolution of ER issues, consulting and coordinating with ER staff, HR Business Partners and Legal Counsel to ensure consistent application of Company policies and procedures in compliance with federal and state law, and ensure company-wide ER risk mitigation. This position reports to the Sr. Director, HR - Corporate Groups and ER.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leading and managing a group of senior level individual contributors. Set the overall strategy and direction for ER, creating a strong partnership with HR management, Legal and corporate management (e.g. Security, Health Care Compliance) on the resolution and communication of ER issues. Provide ongoing coaching, feedback and professional development support to staff to insure that each team member has the critical competencies necessary to meet the requirements of their job.
Consult with management on ER issues (grievances, disciplinary actions and documentation, coaching and consulting) and serve as the senior leader for escalation of ER issues, including investigations and recommended solutions. Develop, interpret and apply company policies and procedures, track trends across the company and provide direction to employees and managers to ensure compliance with appropriate federal and state regulations. Under the direction of Legal, conduct integrated data analysis and metrics to review trends across the Company so that, in collaboration with HR leaders, strategies to address identified issues are developed and implemented. Ensure accurate, thorough and timely documentation of ER cases.
Direct the development of ER programs to ensure communication and understanding through all employee levels, including training to management and HR, in coaching and counseling, performance management and corrective action documentation. Maintain a working knowledge of all HR programs to assist in developing communication and ensure statutory and regulatory compliance. Monitor and benchmark programs and practices against internal and external standards and recommend changes as appropriate.
Qualifications and Experience * 15+ years of broad HR management, employment law or consulting experience; in or with organizations recognized for best practices in HR preferred * Minimum of 8 years direct ER experience including significant knowledge of federal, state and local employment laws, responding to external agency charges (e.g. DFEH, EEOC), and providing support in employment litigation situations * Broad understanding of other HR functional disciplines (e.g. compensation, staffing) and HR systems and process * ~5 years demonstrated effectiveness in leading and managing a group of 7-15 senior level consultants * Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or advanced HR certification (ie, SPHR) a plus
Abilities * Demonstrated ability to build credibility and constructive and effective relationships across the organization with all levels of managers, leaders and individual contributors * Effective leadership and management skills * Excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communications skills (oral and written) to effectively communicate across all organizational levels * Experience working in a multi-cultural, fast-paced and matrix environment * Broad technical knowledge and experience in Employee Relations and ability to apply technical expertise to resolve a variety of highly complex issues providing unique solutions aligned with business needs * Comprehensive expertise in risk assessment and a strong foundation in the application of employment law in business situations * Effective strategic consultation and influencing skills and ability to think systemically and consult strategically with all levels of managers and leaders * Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret written business and statistical data * Excellent issue resolution skills with the ability to negotiate and resolve complex matters, putting specific problems in context of larger system * Managerial courage - able to have effective critical conversations, using diplomacy and tact to diffuse high tension situations effectively * Demonstrated success in leveraging participation of key stakeholders in the resolution of employee issues and implementation of recommended solutions * Fluent in English
